After being imprisoned for nearly six years Paul Whelan, the Michigan man who has been detained in Russia since 2018 is expected to be returning home Thursday as part of a prisoner swap between the United States and Russia. According to the Associated Press, a source speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed a swap is underway, but did not name who is involved.

However, multiple news outlets report Whelan and another American, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will be released from Russian custody as part of the swap. The AP reports Russian-American radio journalist Alsu Kurmasheva will also be part of the swap.
